Advising Philosophy
I believe academic advising is a collaborative process and an essential service that supports students’ academic, personal, and professional development. My philosophy is grounded in NACADA’s seven Core Values—caring, commitment, empowerment, inclusivity, integrity, professionalism, and respect—and is guided by the Appreciative Advising framework. This mindset centers on caring about and believing in the potential of others, maintaining an attitude of gratitude, and continually refining my practice to ensure I never settle for less than excellence.
At Grainger Engineering, I have the privilege of working with students who are exceptionally driven, intellectually curious, and often navigating rigorous academic demands alongside ambitious personal goals. I do not see my role as limited to administrative guidance; instead, I serve as a conduit, educator, and mentor who helps students make meaning of their experiences, connect with campus resources, and align their academic pathways with their broader aspirations. John C. Maxwell’s words resonate deeply with my purpose: “No one stands taller in the climb to success than when he bends over to help up someone else.” This quote reflects both my commitment to our students and my dedication to helping my team feel accomplished and successful in our shared mission.
Drawing upon NACADA’s developmental advising theory, I embrace a holistic, student-centered approach. Grainger students are more than GPAs or résumés—they are emerging professionals navigating high expectations, innovative challenges, and identity formation. I strive to empower each student to self-advocate, make confident decisions, and grow as problem solvers. As Bill Gates once said, “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.” Each advising interaction is an opportunity to equip students not only to thrive academically but to contribute meaningfully as citizens of the world.
The Appreciative Advising model—Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don’t Settle—provides the foundation for my practice. I aim to create a welcoming and trusting environment (Disarm), listen deeply to students' stories and goals (Discover), encourage visioning beyond immediate requirements (Dream), co-develop intentional academic plans (Design), offer consistent and compassionate support (Deliver), and continually challenge students to pursue their highest potential (Don’t Settle).
I view academic advising as a collaborative act of interpretation. Each student brings a rich, evolving narrative shaped by their lived experiences, a combination of nature and nurture. To truly discover more about my students, I seek to understand their backgrounds, values, and aspirations. My role is not to prescribe a direction, but to guide them in interpreting their goals and decisions within a broader, meaningful context. In doing so, I help create a space where students are empowered to find clarity and coherence in their educational journey.
Through a hermeneutic lens, I strive to interpret each student’s goals and challenges within their unique personal, cultural, and academic contexts. Advising through this lens is not just about determining a student's path—it is about understanding how they make meaning of that path. This requires active listening, avoiding one-size-fits-all solutions, engaging in thoughtful dialogue, and encouraging self-reflection. I recognize that this work requires time, patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental commitment to each student’s growth and transformation.
In essence, I believe academic advising at Grainger is a partnership that cultivates growth, builds community, and prepares students to lead with integrity and purpose in a dynamic, global landscape. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to walk alongside Grainger engineers as they pursue excellence and make a lasting impact.
