Advising Philosophy

Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” While I resonate with this sentiment, I also recognize its nuance. I love working with students—guiding, supporting, and challenging them—but I also know that advising is not effortless. It is thoughtful, intentional work that requires empathy, adaptability, and continuous learning.

At the heart of my philosophy is the belief that student success does not follow a single, linear path. Each student brings a unique constellation of identities, experiences, strengths, and challenges, and my role is to honor that individuality while guiding them toward purposeful growth. Advising is not about providing the “right” answer, but about illuminating multiple pathways, helping students weigh their options, and empowering them to make choices that align with their values.

I view advising as a collaborative process rooted in clear and transparent communication. I strive to listen beyond a student’s initial concern to uncover the broader context, addressing immediate needs while also fostering long-term development. In doing so, I balance accountability with compassion—encouraging students to take ownership of their choices while also allowing room for reflection, resilience, and the growth that comes with self-authorship.

My practice is grounded in a holistic, student-centered perspective informed by Chickering’s Theory of Identity Development. Academic performance is only one dimension of success; mental health, social identity, financial realities, and co-curricular involvement all shape the student experience. By recognizing these interconnected factors, I connect students to resources that support their whole selves, not just their academic progress.

Equity and inclusion are central to my work. Regardless of race, gender identity, socioeconomic status, ability, or background, students should feel seen, respected, and safe in our conversations. I aim to foster a welcoming space, model inclusive behaviors, and encourage students to carry that sense of belonging into their wider communities.

On a large campus, it is easy to feel like just a number. That is why I prioritize authentic relationships built on empathy, mutual respect, and trust. I bring positivity and encouragement to my work, validating students’ experiences and celebrating their achievements—sometimes even with a well-timed laugh or supportive gesture.

Ultimately, I see advising as both a partnership and a catalyst for transformation. It is about far more than course selection; it is about helping students discover who they are, define their purpose, and chart their own path forward. My greatest privilege as an advisor is walking alongside students as they grow into confident, resilient, and intentional individuals prepared to leave a lasting impact well beyond graduation.
